We were thrilled to discuss the historical drama The Man Who Knew Infinity, a popular film among our community. In 1913, Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-taught Indian genius, traveled to Cambridge where he forged a lifelong bond with his eccentric math professor, G.H. Hardy, while fighting a world that refused to acknowledge his achievements. Ramanujan is perhaps the most mystical and mysterious figure in mathematics.

We were thrilled to spotlight community member Jenna Carpenter, Founding Dean of Engineering at Campbell University, for a discussion of our community’s favorite film, “Hidden Figures.” Jenna had occasion to meet and interview Margot Shetterly, who authored the book that grew into the film phenomenon.

We were thrilled to welcome Doron Weber, Vice President and Program Director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, as our special guest. His work on books and films about science has sparked phenomenal works, such as Hidden Figures, Oppenheimer, and Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story. An exciting online event about “Picture a Scientist,” where the community had a chance to interact live with both producer Nancy Blachman and Sharon Shattuck, the creator of the film.

We were so happy to celebrate both Pi Day and Women’s History Month with a discussion of the film Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani. Mirzakhani was both the first woman and the first Iranian to be honored by mathematics’ highest prize, the Fields Medal.

Navajo Math Circles is a one-hour film that documents the meeting of two worlds: that of some of the country’s most accomplished mathematicians and math educators, with the children and teachers in the underserved, largely rural Navajo educational system. Math itself is a cross-cultural language, and the film is designed to inspire cross-cultural understanding on multiple levels.here
