Anita Layton (Panelist, Faculty of Math) Anita Layton is the Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematical Biology and Medicine, and Professor of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Pharmacy and Biology at the University of Waterloo. She is also a representative of the Women in Mathematics Committee within the Faculty of Mathematics.
Andrea Chakma (Panelist, Grad Student (Engineering)) Andrea is a fourth-year Mechatronics Engineering student at the University of Waterloo and newly elected Board of Directors for Girl Guides of Canada. She has been the President of the Women in Engineering Undergraduate Student Committee since 2022 and is passionate about creating a safe space for current and future women in engineering students. Andrea has worked in the fields of Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Consulting and currently Product Management. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and volunteering for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
Hilary Bergsieker (Moderator, Faculty of Arts)Hilary Bergsieker is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on the interpersonal dynamics of intergroup interactions and relationships. Among Hillary's publications on Women in STEM is her article "Mapping social exclusion in STEM to men's implicit bias and women's career costs." Published in 2021.
Jeremy Steffler (Panelist, Faculty of Math Equity Officer) Jeremy Steffler is a Waterloo alum (BASc, 1999 & MASc, 2002) with over two decades of service to the Waterloo community. He has served on both the board of the University of Waterloo Staff Association and the University of Waterloo Board of Governors, co-developed the LGBTQ+ Making Spaces program, and developed the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity workshop for Waterloo's Award-Winning Principles of Inclusivity series. He is currently a volunteer mediator with Community Justice Initiatives, Chair of the Rainbow Coalition of Waterloo Region, and is a facilitator for the Certificate in Conflict Management and Mediation program at Conrad Grebel University College. Jeremy has been recognized for his leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion by the University of Waterloo Faculty Association Equity Committee, as a recipient of their Equity & Inclusivity Award. Jeremy recently joined the Faculty of Mathematics as their Equity Officer, working to empower everyone affiliated with the Faculty to create a welcoming community where individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences feel they belong.
Maliha Ahmed (Panelist, Grad Student (Math)) Currently a 3rd year PhD student at the University of Waterloo (UW) in the Department of Applied Mathematics. Area of research is computational neuroscience with a focus on the evolution of childhood absence epilepsy. Enjoys taking on mentorship roles and continues to serve on the Women in Math committee at UW as a graduate student representative and has been on the Math HeForShe committee as well in the past.
